O meu outro tópico não surtiu bem o efeito que eu esperava, acho que a proposta desse talvez seja melhor.

A idéia é fazer um tipo de seleção blogóide de episódios especialmente interessantes de podcasts, em vez de listar apenas os programas em geral, que sempre tem os seus altos e baixos. De repente você ouve algum podcast especialmente interessante, e posta aqui o link e descrição resumida.

No bloggingheads.tv, em Science Saturday: Pre-Apocalyptic Edition, o escritor de divulgação científica John Horgan conversa com o autor e professor de ciências políticas Thomas Homer-Dixon sobre questões relacionadas aos temas dos livros do último: conflitos e suas causas. Mais ou menos na mesma linha de "Colapso" de Jared Diamond. O nome exagerado do episódio é costume/piada do programa, e tem a ver com a situação de energia, que ele coloca como bastante influente nessa questão.

Um detalhe interessante mencionado: a relação de energia gasta e obtida no etanol americano produzido com milho é de aproximadamente 1:1, ou seja, é, para fins de energia, uma idiotice.

Episódio muito interessante do Science Saturday (blogginhheads). Paul Bloom discute com Joshua Knobe sobre aspectos inatos ou naturais da mente, alguns dos quais talvez nos deixem predispostos a crenças morais, e no sobrenatural. Um dos pontos mais interessantes foi citar um experimento que mostrava que crianças bem pequenas não vêem humanos como outros objetos físicos, sujeitos à intuições do mundo físico que eles tem para outros objetos, mas em vez disso, não acham estranho que humanos aparentem se "teletransportar" - como um fantasma.

Mais ou menos relacionado a isso, mas não vi nesse episódio, a psicóloga Alison Gopnik mencionou qualquer coisa sobre como as crianças, até mesmo depois de passada a fase onde ainda não teriam desenvolvida a "teoria da mente", parecem achar que alguns adultos (como professoras do pré-escolar) são onicientes.

The World Crisis of the 17th Century

Geoffrey Parker, Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History at Ohio State University, is a renowned scholar of early modern European social, political, and military history. A Fellow of the British Academy (the highest honor bestowed on a scholar of the humanities in Great Britain), he is the author of many books, including The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 1500-1800 (1988) and The Grand Strategy of Philip II (1998). In 1992 the King of Spain named him Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella for his contributions to Spanish history. Parker has also received two Guggenheim Fellowships to support research on his forthcoming book, Climate and Catastrophe: The World Crisis of the 17th Century (Oxford 2007).

Climate and Catastrophe will bring new global and environmental perspectives to bear on the history of early modern Europe. Parker analyses the historical records and traces the ways in which dramatic climate changes of the 1640s precipitated a cascading series of violent social, economic, and political crises around the globe—from China to Europe to the New World colonies. Acutely relevant to current concerns about the human, economic, and political consequences of global warming, Parker’s research brings historical perspective to bear on current discussions and debates about environmental policies, international politics, and globalization. In his Katz Lecture, Parker will recount this history and probe its meaning for the present.
