[en] Beatification of fascist martyrs of the Spanish Civil War
« Online: 21 de Julho de 2006, 21:56:16 »
According to The Telegraph the Vatican plans to beatify 168 "martyrs" who perished in the Spanish Civil War at the hands of anti-fascist forces fighting against the Franco regime. The article notes that the Spanish Catholic church was a powerful ally of the Generalissimo.

What they don't mention is that the previous Pope, JP2, who loved to beatify dead people on the flimsiest of excuses, already created hundreds of saints who died in the Spanish Civil War, back in 2001, and before that, the Pope beatified "an illiterate horse trader known as El Pele who was shot during the Spanish Civil War." :papa:
"Galileo was more perceptive than his prosecutors" - Pope John Paul II, 1992

That's not surprising, since Vatican supported Franco's dictatorship. It was among their best interess to fight comunism in Europe, even if they had to ally with fascists.

not a word for all the high-school teachers executed by Franco's forces. Hypocrits, murderers and heaven real-state salesmen... Spain was better off without them. But look at this country today :(

right-wingers like Franco or Hitler were supported by the Church by the time of WWII... that's no surprise at all.
