Four dead as Queen's Day celebrations turn into tragedy

Celebrations of Queen's Day in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn took a tragic turn around midday on Thursday. Four people were killed and 13 injured when a car ploughed through a crowd of spectators watching the Queen's Day parade (video).

The queen may have escaped an attack. The car broke through the barriers, hitting people and crashing into a monumental column as the open-topped coach carrying the Royal Family passed.

The public prosecutor confirmed at a press conference that the driver was acting intentionally, but that there is no terrorist connection. He is reported to have made two earlier attempts to cross safety barriers, driving at a speed of at least 80 kms/hr. The driver was injured in the crash and had to be cut from his vehicle, after which he was arrested and taken away for interrogation. No details have been released about his identity.

Police are meticulously searching the car wreck, assisted by the national demining squad and in the presence of the National Anti-terror Co-ordinator.

The Royal Family, waving to the crowd from their open-topped bus, witnessed the incident. Immediately afterwards the vehicle was driven to Het Loo palace, accompanied by security guards. The Government Information Service has announced the queen and her family are deeply shocked by the events.

The mayor of Apeldoorn has cancelled all Queen's Day festivities in his city. In Rotterdam, too, the celebrations have been cancelled, while the capital Amsterdam and other cities are toning down most activities. Parties, performances and flea markets may have to close earlier than usual, but given the size of the crowds that have flocked to the capital, Amsterdam in particular is unlikely to ask people to leave early.

Queen's Day is an annual national holiday, celebrated on the birthday of the late Queen Juliana, 30 April. Queen Beatrix' actual birthday is on 31 January; she is 71 today.

Update: according to Dutch media, the driver confessed that it was an intentional act, not an accident. The driver is a white male, so no Al Qaeda connection. Speculation in the Dutch blogosphere is that it’s either the act of a lone mad man or of animal rights terrorists - the same people who were responsible for the murder of Pim Fortuyn.

Karst Tates, driver who attacked Dutch royals, was 'in despair' over recession

The man who rammed his car into crowds at the annual parade for the Dutch Queen, killing six, appears to have been in despair after losing his job and his home.

Karst Tates, 38, died early yesterday from injuries that he received when smashing his Suzuki car through barriers and hitting bystanders in a failed attempt to reach the Royal Family’s open-topped bus. He was due to hand back the keys of his apartment yesterday because he could no longer pay the rent.

Tates was described by neighbours as a friendly loner who had worked unsociable hours as a security guard before being made redundant this year. They added that they rarely saw him, and that he had few visitors and no known girlfriend. [...]

Já pensou se todos que se encontram em situação semelhante também reagissem da mesma forma?

Nem sabia que a Holanda é uma monarquia.... Não entendo muito sobre reis, rainhas, etc.... Qual o papel de uma família real?

Acho que são mais de enfeite. Meio como uma espécie de cabide de empregos estatal, só que muito mais luxuoso e cujo emprego é ser uma espécie de relações-públicas. São monarquia parlamentarista, até usada de garota-propaganda pelos monarquistas na época do plebiscito.

Some a isso a função de manter a noção de estabilidade e o papel na formação de uma identidade nacional. Parece estúpido, mas isso é importante.

Identidade nacional, coisa muito valorizada na Europa. Veja que até o uniforme da seleção holandeza de futebol é laranja em homenagem à rainha, que é da casa de Orange.

Valorizada, mas de valor questinável.

Acho que é uma faca de dois gumes: se a identidade nacional é boa, pode afetar positivamente a auto-estima do povo, o que é bom;  se escorregam, como seres humanos, afeta a auto-estima nacional. Sem falar em todo paparazzismo em torno, como no caso da família real inglesa, talvez até tendo contribuído para a morte da princesa Diana, e toda comoção e etc. Outro lado negativo ainda é o nacionalismo que pode emergir disso, a aversão generalizada aos imigrantes.

Uma noção de que as linhagens biológicas e culturais humanas tem um dever moral de continuar naquela região para sempre, mantendo a mesma cultura, com um mínimo de influência externa possível, e que há algo errado em mudarem de um lugar para outro, conforme mudar a situação. Com imigrantes buscando melhorar a vida, sendo vistos como parasitas, aproveitadores, não-brasileiros/americanos/holandeses "verdadeiros", mesmo nascendo lá, mesmo sendo netos, bisnetos, n-netos do imigrante original (principalmente evidenciado na hifenização dos americanos, que raramente falam anglo-americanos ou euro-americanos, e agora no Brasil, como imitação disso, com afro-brasileiros). Só porque trazem uma bagagem cultural de outra região.

Acho que a melhor "identidade nacional" que poderia existir seria uma que de certa forma se auto-negasse, enfatizando a importância maior da identidade individual.
