Ainda que para secularistas o casamento gay não tenha qualquer razão para ser visto como algo mais digno de preocupação do que um casamento normal onde as partes envolvidas adotam posições sexuais heterodoxas, é um erro pensar que isso realmente é o suficiente para tornar inofensiva a sua igualdade absoluta em termos legais.
O perigo não virá, de qualquer forma, de qualquer conseqüência diretamente relacionada a homossexuais e heterossexuais usarem os mesmos formulários legais para terem suas uniões reconhecidas, mas do fato que o segmento dos conservadores religiosos, uma parcela muito mais significativa e poderosa da população, tem horror a essa idéia.
Essa igualdade legal dá a oportunidade perfeita a seus líderes despertarem mais revolta em seus discursos de que são feitos de vítimas, de que a sociedade está sendo corrompida pelos liberais, que estão travando uma guerra contra Deus e o cristianismo. Será mais fácil angariar apoio dos semi-conservadores religiosos ou conservadores mais em cima do muro, para medidas que afetem muito mais drasticamente a liberdade do que as diferenças burocráticas que os homossexuais tem que recorrer para conseguirem reconhecimento de suas uniões.
Há dentre esses os que declaram com todas as letras de que a separação entre igreja e estado é simplesmente errada, que o governo deveria ser cristão, que os direitos deveriam ser para cristãos, alguns estendendo suas declarações não só ao território nacional, mas em âmbito mundial.
Os pretensos "conservadores seculares" se dizem contrários ao casamento homossexual exatamente nesses mesmos termos do heterossexual, com vagas justificativas de que poderia corromper o pilar da civilização que é o casamento tradicional, nunca explicando exatamente como essa "corrupção" exatamente o comprometeria.
Não penso que esteja aí o perigo, mas no comprometimento de outro pilar, a liberdade, pelos que temem o casamento homossexual por motivações religiosas, e dos que simplesmente os apoiam por uma espécie de inércia.
