Poor inglês? No problem for Brazil's diplomats
« Online: 19 de Abril de 2005, 02:46:19 »
RIO DE JANEIRO – In Brasil, the importância of inglês has been reducido. For diplomatas, speaking the language of Bush and Blair is not as essencial as it once was.

Across the world, English is recognized as the language of commerce, entertainment, travel, and much else. But thanks to a decree issued earlier this year by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, prospective diplomats no longer need to be fluent in English to win a place at Brazil's diplomacy school, the Instituto Rio Branco.

Supporters are hailing the move, saying it will democratize entry. Critics call it an indictment of a failing school system.

What happened was not exactly this. Now is not mandatory being good on English before entering diplomat school, but there [in the school] there are English classes.

This is a commom mistake everybody is doing.

Alright then... But they will learn both things at same time? This will extend the duration of classes, I supose...

yeah galileo, that happened in the beginning of this year. however, it doesn't make much difference.
because if you want to be a brazilian diplomat (like i do), you must first have gone to university. it is dificult to get out of the university not knowing english.  then, there are 10.000 people for 32.. how do i say it.. slots? ok, so there are 300 people for one ...slot in the rio branco institute. so, it's very competitive. people who can make it through the test should have a high level of knowlege, hence, should also speak english...
some decades ago, besides english, french was also required.

Yes, French used to be the international language of diplomacy.

Now it's English.

That's not me - that was in the original article in the Christian Science Monitor that I linked to. I think they were trying to be humorous.

All I did was add a few accents.

That spelling was in the original article:

I had to use the internet to figure out where the accents go. I don't know portuguese.. :(

it is written "reducido" so that english speakers can understand, that's for whom the text was written. reducido resembles more reduced than reduzido.
