Report: Average Male 4,000% Less Effective In Fights Than They Imagine
https://www.youtube.com/v/fe3na9umxDA

Contradicting the long-held belief that they would just go off and destroy anyone who tried to mess with them, a Department of Health and Human Services report published Thursday revealed that U.S. males would be on average 4,000 percent less effective in a fight than they imagine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-escalation

De-escalation refers to behavior that is intended to escape escalations of conflicts. It may also refer to approaches in conflict resolution. Escalations of commitment are often hard from spiraling out of proportions without specific measures being taken.

[...] Furthermore, a valiant attempt to synthesize the various models and definitions was conducted by Price & Baker (2012).[5] Thematic analysis of 11 eligible studies converged on seven themes: three related to staff skills (e.g. empathetic concern, calm appearance and gentle tone of voice) and four related to the process of intervening (e.g. establish rapport, maintain safety, problem solve and set limits). [...]

English Modified version of the ‘De-Escalating Aggressive Behaviour Scale’ (EMDABS)
1. Valuing the client: Provides genuine acknowledgement that the client's concerns are valid, important and will be addressed in a meaningful way.

2. Reducing fear: Listens actively to the client and offers genuine empathy while suggesting that the client's situation has the potential for positive future change.

3. Inquiring about client's queries and anxiety: Can communicate a thorough understanding of the client's concerns, and works to uncover the root of the issue.

4. Providing guidance to the client: Suggests multiple ways to the help the client with their current concerns and recommends preventative measures.

5. Working out possible agreements: Takes responsibility for the client's care and concludes the encounter with an agreed-upon short-term solution and a long-term action plan.

6. Remaining calm: Maintains a calm tone of voice and steady pace that is appropriate to the client's feelings and behaviour.

7. Risky: Maintains a moderate distance from the client to ensure safety, but does not appear guarded and fearful.

Police and corrections

Starting around 2015, after facing criticism after numerous high-profile killings of civilians by police officers, some[which?] police forces in the US adopted de-escalation training, designed to reduce the risk of confrontations turning violent or deadly for anyone involved.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

The FIRST STEP Act prison reform bill mandates de-escalation training, especially for "incidents that involve the unique needs of individuals who have a mental illness or cognitive deficit."[12]

Achava que isso fosse uma prática/matéria de "estudo" policial há muito mais tempo. :hein:

[...]

Armed with nothing but his wit and charisma, Darren was confronted by a mugger at 3am, demanding his wallet and looking for a fight. Unshaken by the situation, Darren simply said “The wall outside my house isn’t 4ft high,” which managed to confuse the mugger so much that he broke into tears and left the scene.

Although this may sound unrealistic, I have actually heard several stories of similar tricks successfully managing to stop a mugging. A friend of mine was once threatened by a man with a knife, asking for his wallet, to which he replied “How can anything really be so bad that us poor people go around taking what little we have from each other?” The mugger simply looked at him, put the knife away, and walked away. This is reminiscent of a story from 2012 in which a man reportedly stopped a robbery by quoting Pulp Fiction.

The key, according to Darren Brown, is to ask or state something completely unexpected. This forces the offender to break from their plan, to directly have to deal with the adrenaline and stress of what they are trying to do. In Darren’s case: the man broke down in tears before leaving. He suggests simply memorizing a few good lines or random statements that can simply be relied upon when in a pinch. Apparently, this simple tactic can save a lot of money and stress.

[...]

Outro relato do alegadamente ocorrido com Brown diz que não foi um assaltante, mas um casal bêbado e agressivo.

[...] As I walked to my hotel, I found myself heading towards a young couple coming in the opposite direction.

They were both quite drunk and arguing loudly.

By the time I realized that they were going to be troublesome it was too late to cross the road and get out of the way. As they approached me, I might have caught the guy’s eye (a mistake if I did), because I was suddenly aware of the horrible words “What the f*ck are you looking at?” shouted at me from suddenly close range with the force and pent-up anger of a very aggressive Welch drunk.

Peripherally, I saw the girl walk off down the road and leave us.

There’s an old Wing Chun Kung Fu technique I would normally have snapped into without thought: in the face of aggression, you lie on the floor in the fetal position and sob, kissing the toecap of your aggressor’s shoe.

However, having recently thought about confusion techniques to disarm aggressors, I was able to put some of my theory into practice.

I made my body relax and my face friendly, and I said, “The wall outside my house isn’t four foot high.”

He paused for a moment.

“What?!”

“The wall outside my house isn’t four foot high. But I lived in Spain for a bit and you should see the walls there — enormous, right up here!” I gestured with my hand to clarify how high I meant.

Now, you’re going to thank me for this, so bear with me.

Here’s what happened:

He has come at me with a huge amount of adrenalin and force, and his question “What are you looking at?”, like any intimidating question, is designed to put him in the position of aggressor. No direct answer to his question can change that.

My confident and friendly answer about the walls makes absolute sense within itself, but is completely out of context.

This guy has to work out what I’m talking about, and in doing so he becomes enormously confused. By offering him more of the same (talking about Spain), he feels he might be afforded some relief from the confusion, but such clarification doesn’t come. He is wrong-footed, confused and no longer in control.

He experiences an “adrenalin dump,” which leaves him useless.

After I told him about the Spanish walls, I added, “But here, they’re tiny! Look at these ones!” And I pointed out a tiny three-brick-high wall around the garden right next to us. He looked at the wall, and that movement told me that I now had the upper hand. He looked back at me, rather slumped in himself by now, let out a long, “Oh, fu-u-u-u-ck…” and crumpled, hanging his head hopelessly.

To my delight and surprise, he started telling me about his girlfriend bottling someone at a party, or similar. He sat down on the curb, distraught and broken, and I sat next to him and listened for a while, offering sympathetic noises and understanding.

When I left, he thanked me.”
