About the Darwin Era
In the last decades the number of atheists on earth has increased significantly. The phantastic scientific discoveries of the last century, the globalization of the last decade, and the brave engagement of intellectuals all over the world led to a strong self-conscious new atheist movement.
After thousands of years of superstition, hundreds of religions that came and went, we believe that mankind has now the chance to become adult. There is no more reason to hold on to irrational traditions that impede the advancement of the human civilization. Science gave us the key to our existence: an explanation about life and the universe, and our position herein.
Science tells us that we are solely responsible for the future of life on earth. We cannot pass our responsibility to someone else (for example to a god).
Alas the whole world still follows religion-based calendars (Gregorian, Islamic, Jewish, etc) which defined holidays that remember saints, religious leaders etc. We feel that atheists should have their own calendar, commemorating great humanists and scientists instead of saints or mythical creatures.
But which year should mark our 'year zero'? Which is the most pregnant day that marks the most important leap in intellectual enlightenment? It is clearly the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859. It was THIS masterpiece that changed everything. The 'Origin' worried the churches even more than Copernicus'

Dialogues on two world systems because Darwin discovered a provable explanation about the origin of man (and all other species) without the need to assume any creator.
The first time in human history, mankind recognized their real origins. Darwin taught us that the religious explanations that dictated the world view for many thousands of years are completely wrong. The Origin of the Species became the definite fundament of atheism.
In the 150 years since the 'Origin' has been published its defenders often had a hard life. Even today many people still demonize and decline the scientific truth of the evolution because it conflicts with their beliefs. Creationism and Intelligent Design Theories are quite popular today.
The Darwin Era should represent a new age of enlightenment. Use this calendar to express that you believe in a humanistic free-thinking movement, where reason and scientifc research should replace superstition and belief.

This is the first release of the Darwin Era Calendar. Some remembrance days are self-evident, but many others are still matter of discussion and consensus. Hence, this calendar is not a final release but a work in progress.

Sobre a Era Darwin
Na última década o número de ateus no mundo aumentou significativamente. As fantásticas descobertas científicas do último século, a globalização no último decênio e o bravo engajamento de intelectuais por todo o mundo levou ao surgimento de um forte movimento ateísta.
Após milhares de anos de supestição e centenas de religiões que nasceram e pereceram, nós acreditamos que a humanidade tem agora a chance de finalmente chegar à fase adulta. Não há mais razão para se agarrar a tradições irracionais que impedem o avanço da civilização. A ciência nos deu a chave para nossa existência: uma explicação sobre a vida, o universo e nosso lugar nisso tudo. A ciência nos diz que somos os únicos responsáveis pelo futuro da vida na Terra e não podemos passar nossa responsabilidade para outrem (por exemplo, para um deus.)
Apesar de o mundo todo ainda seguir calendários baseados na religião (Gregoriano, Islâmico, Judeu, etc) que definem feriados que lembram santos, líderes religiosos, etc, nós sentimos que os ateus deviam ter seu próprio calendário comemorando grandes humanistas e cientistas, em vez de santos ou criaturos míticas.
Mas que ano deveria marcar nosso 'ano zero'? Qual é o dia mais significativo que marca o mais importante salto no esclarecimento intelectual? É claramente a publicação de A Origem das Espécies, por Charles Darwin, em 1859. Foi ESTA obra-prima que mudou tudo. A 'Origem' abalou a Igreja mais ainda do que o De Revolutionibus de Copérnico ou os Diálogos sobre os Dois Máximos Sistemas de Mundo de Galileu porque Darwin descobriu uma explicação para a origem do homem (e de todas as outras espécies) sem a necessidade de assumir um criador.
Pela primeira vez na história humana, a humanidade reconheceu sua verdadeira origem. Darwin nos ensinou que as explicações religiosas que ditaram nossa visão de mundo por muitos milhares de anos estavam completamente erradas. A Origem das Espécies se tornou o fundamento definitivo do ateísmo.
Nos 150 anos desde que a 'Origem' foi publicada, seus defensores tiveram uma vida difícil. Até hoje muitas pessoas ainda demonizam e recusam a verdade científica da evolução porque ela se choca com suas crenças. O Criacionismo e o Design Inteligente são muito populares ainda hoje.
A Era Darwin deve representar uma nova era de esclarecimento. Use este calendário para expressar que você acredita em um movimento humanístico e livre-pensador, onde a razão e a investigação científica devem substituir a superstição e a crendice.

Esta é a primeira edição do Calendário da Era Darwin. Algumas datas comemorativas são autoevidentes, mas muitas outras ainda são questão para discussão e consenso, portanto este calendário não é um lançamento acabado, mas um trabalho em progresso.
