Gaddafi fights to regain control
Forces loyal to embattled Libyan leader launch fresh attack on Az Zawiyah, close to Tripoli, but opposition fights back.

Forces loyal to Gaddafi have increased attacks in an attempt to retake areas controlled by opposition groups

Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, has launched a fresh military offensive to retake some of the towns he lost control over the past 18 days.

Opposition to his decades-old rule has quickly swelled into a full-blown rebellion, but Gaddafi stepped up attacks on Friday. By Saturday morning, his forces broke through opposition defences in the city of Az Zawiyah after they began renewed attacks at 6am local time, eyewitnesses told Al Jazeera.

The loyalist forces attacked residential areas in the city, firing heavy artillery from all sides, including from the sea. Tanks and armoured vehicles had broken through defences into Martyrs' Square, in the heart of the town, early in the day.

By 10am, the people of the town had retaken Martyrs' Square, after hours of intense fighting and a high number of casualties. At least 30 people were killed in fierce clashes in the town the previous day, but the death toll from the assault on Saturday morning was unclear.

But Gaddafi's forces had encircled the town and were closing in on the centre again. By midday, they had blocked off all access to the town, the Reuters news agency reported.

"Az Zawiyah is encircled by Gaddafi's forces, there are a lot of checkpoints. They are tightening their grip on the centre," a Reuters journalist said, adding government forces were manning checkpoints some 3km from the centre of town.

Dr Hamdi estimated more than 150 people had been injured on Saturday morning.

"A large number of people are gathered in the centre of the square after they pushed forces out of the city," Dr Hamdi told Al Jazeera.

Thousands of people were assembled at the square, he added, preparing to defend it from any further assaults by Gaddafi's forces.

"There is news that the [pro-]Gaddafi security forces are gathering at the outside of the city and we are bracing ourselves for another attack," Dr Hamdi said.

Others called for foreign intervention to prevent further loss of life.

"There is a very tragic situation in the city," Ahmed, a resident of Az Zawiyah, said. "We were expecting the world to intervene but they have let us down."

"It's not a matter of oil or gas being taken out of our country, it's human lives," he said, pleading for the United Nations or the Arab League to step in to protect Libyan civilians.

"They have no mercy on civilians; the regime is attacking everything indiscriminately," Ahmed said.

Gaddafi's security forces were using ambulances to kidnap wounded people, Human Rights Solidarity, a Geneva-based organisation, told Al Jazeera.

"Now with all the artillery, tanks and armored vehicles, the fierce fighting is ongoing and people are massacred in a way that we didn't see in Iraq,” Abdul-Fatah Az-Zawi, another local, told Al Jazeera.

Deadlock

The opposition has wrested the entire eastern half of the country from Gaddafi's grip, along with several cities in the west close to the capital Tripoli, which is now symbolic to his defiance.

In the past few weeks, the opposition forces were able to fend off several assaults on the territory they control.

Members of Gaddafi's government, diplomats, soldiers and even some of his closest allies have renounced their allegiance, and foreign leaders are becoming increasingly vocal in their calls for the besieged leader to step down.

Anti-Gaddafi protests had been planned on Friday afternoon in the capital, but Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught reported that security personnel were out in force in sensitive parts of the city, and quickly surrounded people who appeared likely to demonstrate.

"Tripoli itself is a city almost completely locked down, electronic communications cut off for the previous 24 hours, shops shut, particularly nobody on the street," she said.

Meanwhile, rebels claimed control of the strategic town of Ras Lanuf, after exchanging heavy shelling and machine gun fire with pro-Gaddafi forces on Friday.

There was no sign of soldiers loyal to Gaddafi in the town on Saturday, although the Gaddafi government's denials  that the opposition controlled Ras Lanuf.

Rebel fighters opened fire on a helicopter flying overhead on Saturday, according to the Reuters news agency.

At least eight people were killed and more than 20 wounded during the fighting on Friday, a doctor said.

It was unclear what the rebels would do following the battle in Ras Lanuf. The next major town along the coastal road to the west is Sirte, Gaddafi's home town.

The fighting underlined how both sides are pushing against the deadlock. Both sides are struggling to take new territory, Al Jazeera’s Jacky Rowland reported.

"The situation in the east of the country is really a stalemate, with anti-Gaddafi forces either unable or unwilling to advance further to the west and to try to take the fight closer to Gaddafi's strongholds like Sirte and Tripoli," she said.

"If you look at the rebel forces, they're a rather undisciplined, orderly bunch," she said.

For many of the anti-Gaddafi fighters, this is their first military experience.

Tarik Yousef, dean of the Dubai School of government, told Al Jazeera that foreign powers are likely to be trying to assess the new dynamics that have emerged in the wake of the transformative changes that have rocked the country in recent weeks.

"Effectively, Libya is now a failed state, with two divided geographies," he explained.

Diplomatic battles

Not to be outdone on the diplomatic front, Gaddafi's government on Friday asked that Ali Abdussalam Treki, a senior Libyan diplomat, be accepted as the country's new envoy to the UN after the entire Libyan delegation in New York backed the pro-democracy protesters.

Gaddafi's government made its first official reaction to sanctions announced by the UN, in a letter by Mussa Kussa, his foreign minister.

The letter called for the travel ban and assets freeze ordered against Gaddafi and his close aides "to be suspended until such time as the truth is established".

Kussa demanded that the Security Council "stand up to the states that are threatening force against it."

The foreign minister added that military action against Libya would be "inconsistent" with the UN charter and international law and "compromise a threat to peace and security in the region and indeed the whole world."

Western powers say they are studying a no-fly zone against Libya to prevent attacks on civilians. Yet diplomats say that no official request for such action has been made to the UN Security Council.

The UN says that more than 1,000 people have died during the Libya uprising [Reuters]

Anti-government fighters in the western Libyan town of Az Zawiyah have pushed back forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan president, following a fierce assault on the town.

Gaddafi's forces on Saturday encircled Az Zawiyah, which lies just 50km west of the capital Tripoli, manning checkpoints about 3km from the centre, according to reports.

Fighters in the town said a another counter-attack could come soon.

"There is news that the Gaddafi security forces are gathering at the outside of the city and we are bracing ourselves for another attack," Hamdi, a doctor inside Az Zawiya, told Al Jazeera.

More than 30 people were killed and as many as 200 people were said to have been wounded in the fighting that drove government forces out of the town.

Youssef Shagan, a spokesman for the fighters in the town, said that Gaddafi's forces had entered Az Zawiyah at 6am (04:00 GMT) with hundreds of soldier, along with tanks and armoured vehicles.

Gaddafi's forces had broken through defences into Martyrs' Square, in the heart of the town, but hours later were pushed back.

"Our people fought back ... We have won for now and civilians are gathering in the square," Shagan said.

National council

Elsewhere, following heavy fighting on Friday, anti-government forces were said to be in control of Ras Lanuf, a pipeline hub on the Mediterranean coast that houses a major refinery and petrochemical complex, according to reports form the AFP news agency.

The nearby town of Bin Jawad was also under anti-government control on Saturday, sources told Al Jazeera.

In Benghazi, Libya's second city which is in the hands of anti-government forces, the self-declared opposition national council, held their first meeting on Saturday.

"The national council's first formal meeting is starting this morning," Mustafa Gheriani, a spokesman for group, said.

The 30-member body is headed by Mustafa Abdel Jalil, a former justice minister who defected from Gaddafi's camp after protests against the Libyan leader's rule erupted two weeks ago. The meeting was held in secret.

"It's a safety issue," Gheriani said. "This guy [Gadaffi] still assassinates people."

'Call to arms'

Tony Birtley, Al Jazeera's correspondent reporting from Benghazi, said that resistance to Gadaffi's rule was strengthening.

"I think they're coming to the realisation that the outcome is in their own hands. They did think that Gaddafi would leave peacefully, they then thought that the international community would take steps and force him out," he said.

"I think the pendulum has swung now and they believe it is in their own hands.

"They are answering the call to arms, they are coming from all over eastern Libya, bringing their weapons, getting whatever training they can and moving on."

Two blasts at an arms dump on the outskirts of Benghazi left more than 30 people dead, according to medical sources in the city.

The reasons for the blast, which occurred on Friday, were not immediately known.

While members of Gaddafi's government, diplomats, soldiers and even some of his closest allies have renounced their allegiance to Gaddafi, leaving him increasingly isolated, it is unclear whether anti-government fighters would be able to push forward.

"The situation in the east of the country is really a stalemate, with anti-Gaddafi forces either unable or unwilling to advance further to the west and to try to take the fight closer to Gaddafi's strongholds like Sirte and Tripoli," Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Ajdabiya, said.

On Friday, pro-Gaddafi forces fired tear gas to disperse at least 1,000 people in Tripoli's Tajoura district who were holding a  protest against the Libyan leader.

A report from UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that more than 191,000 people are fleeing the violence in Libya.

The report, which cites figures from the International Organisation for Migration says that many of those feeling are immigrant workers heading for Libya's border with neighbouring Tunisia.

Speaking to Al Jazeera's David Frost, Antonio Guterres, the UN high commissioner for refugees, warned that many others, mainly African workers trapped in Libya, were at risk.

"There are hundreds of thousands of African workers in Libya, and very few have shown up at the borders," he said.

"We have received phone calls from people in a desperate situation, afraid of leaving their homes. It's the situation of
these African communities inside Libya that now corresponds to our biggest concern."

'Threat to peace'

On the diplomatic front, Mussa Kussa, the Libyan foreign minister, said in a letter to the UN security council that "a modicum" of force had been used against protesters in Libya.

He demanded that UN sanctions imposed against the Gaddafi, over his bloody crackdown on protesters, be suspended "until such time as the truth is established".

The letter was the first official reaction communicated to the UN since the sanctions were unanimously passed by the council on February 26.

Human rights groups say about 6,000 people have been killed since protests against Gaddafi erupted on February 15. The UN says that more than 1,000 have died.

But diplomats say that no official request for such action has been made to the UN Security Council.

No front militar as notícias da Líbia são desencontradas e preocupantes, na esfera humanitária são desesperadoras, porém no front político as notícias são animadoras porque o repúdio ao tirano Muamar Kadafi parece unânime em diversas instâncias e entidades, coisa que não acontecia há décadas.

Da esfera midiática é que chegam algumas surpresas. Os jornais de quinta-feira (3/3) começaram a registrar um inédito movimento no mundo do show business e da cultura: grandes celebridades anunciaram que pretendem devolver os fabulosos cachês que receberam da família Kadafi para shows particulares. Entre eles os Rolling Stones, Nelly Furtado, Beyoncê.

Por que não o fizeram antes? Celebridade não lê jornal?

Ouro de Trípoli

Em pior situação ficou a prestigiosa London School of Economics que recebeu uma robusta doação de 1,5 milhão de libras (algo como 4 milhões de reais) de uma organização dirigida por um filho da Kadafi, Saif, e em troca facilitou sua aprovação como doutor em ciência política apesar das evidências de que contratara um ghost writer para escrever sua tese (na qual foram encontrados 17 plágios).

Pior é que o jovem Kadafi só depositou uma pequena parte da doação e ninguém teve a coragem de cobrar o resto.

Antes de se desmoralizar como chefe de Estado, Kadafi realizou a incrível façanha de desmoralizar as mais importantes instituições ocidentais comprando-as ostensivamente – com a complacência da grande imprensa internacional.

O déspota líbio também operou no Brasil a partir de meados dos anos 1980: pagou a emissoras de TV, levou a Tripoli charmosas apresentadoras para entrevistá-lo, financiou políticos, partidos, sindicatos, ONGs. Não será difícil rastrear esta atividade, sobretudo agora que grandes organizações jornalísticas estão disponibilizando o seu acervo por via digital.

Forças de Khadafi lançam ataques aéreos contra rebeldes

Forças leais ao líder líbio Muamar Khadafi lançaram novos ataques aéreos contra rebeldes na importante cidade petrolífera de Ras Lanuf, segundo relatos de repórteres das agências de notícias AP e AFP.

Aviões-caça lançaram mísseis no deserto a leste da cidade, mas ainda não há informações sobre vítimas.

Há algumas coisas estranhas nesta notícia.

Primeiro. A derrubada do avião. É muito pequena a possibilidade de um avião de ataque ao solo, se deslocando a cerca de 900 km/h, ser derrubado por um projétil de um lançador-de-granadas. O tiro seria simplesmente por pura sorte.

Segundo. A morte dos pilotos. Estes aviões possuem bons assentos ejetáveis, que funcionam mesmo para situações extremas de baixa altitude, a não ser que o avião estivesse voando invertido, o que não é plausível em uma operação de ataque ao solo. Eu acho que os pilotos foram capturados e executados, se realmente o avião foi derrubado.

Terceiro. A situação das forças armadas líbias. Se a notícia estiver correta, a Líbia possuía apenas dois SU-24 operacionais, o que demonstra a situação precária de Kadafi.

A fonte  seria uma agência de notícias australiana , onde não localizei a notícia original. Como as informações que o site posta sobre a Libia vêm da AFP , AP e Bloomberg eles certamente não têm um correspondente no local.
Até agora não vi uma confirmação independente desta notícia , tenho acompanhado a cobertura pela Al-Jazeera e nem nas notícias nem no blog há referências à derrubada do avião.
